If I Were A Tree

if I were a tree, how would I be?
someone tell me!

would I cling to my bark that holds me so strong,
with leafbuds so tall, thru' the stiffest of storms,
I wouldn't fall?

would I sit thru' a bluster,
so steadfast and true,
with sapwood so deep,
thru' excessive distress,
I wouldn't weep?

would I reach to the sky,
and never look down,
with branches so high,
thru' the most menacing wound,
I wouldn't die?

would I hasten to grow,
as long as I live,
with stems from a flower,
over the myriad of plantlife,
I would tower?

would I be so peculiar,
than pine, birch, and elm,
and cypress and others,
that bear fruit, while never
disturbing another?

would I hold to my earth,
from death until birth,
with my spirit's release,
thru' the most evil of quest,
be existing in peace?

would I ask of the world,
as a creature of God,
'by the land and the sea,
thru' your life hear on earth.

if you were a tree,
would you be like me?
